Armed Forces Day
On Memorial Day, we pay tribute to those who gave the last full measure of devotion. On Veterans Day we honor those who served in the defense of freedom. On Armed Forces Day, we show appreciation to those currently serving our nation.
In 1947, the military branches were merged together into the Department of Defense, replacing the War Department. Two years later, Secretary of Defense, Louis Johnson merged Army, Navy, and Air Force Days into Armed Forces Day. The first Armed Forces Day was celebrated in 1950 and in 1961, President Kennedy made it an annual observance on the 3rd Saturday of May.
Armed Forces Day is the appropriate day to show appreciation to those currently serving around the world in defense of peace and freedom. As it is listed in the Flag Code as a Flag Holiday, fly an American Flag in honor of all Armed Services members.
