Anthony Wayne or Greenville Treaty Flag- August 1795
The Treaty of Paris, ending the American War for Independence, promised British withdraw from the Ohio Valley. However, the British Army continued to occupy forts in the area and to arm and incite native tribes to attack American settlers. Attempting to make the territory safe for settlement, President Washington sent two expeditions. Both were ruthlessly crushed by a British backed native confederacy lead by Chief Little Turtle.
In 1792 Washington called on his old friend, General Anthony Wayne to raise and train an army capable of fighting in dense forest. A year later, Wayne’s army faced Little Turtle’s confederacy at the Battle of Fallen Timbers. An hour of intense fighting sent Little Turtle running for the protection of a British Fort. The British slammed the door in his face.
Realizing they could not count on the British, the native tribes signed the Treaty of Greenville in August of 1795, relinquishing the Ohio Valley to America. As a symbol of the Treaty, General Wayne gave a Flag having 15 alternating red, white, and blue stripes to Little Turtle. The Flag was passed to a granddaughter who sold it to Dr. Perry Moore. Dr. Moore bequeathed the Flag to the Indiana Historical Bureau, where it is currently stored.
